Philip J. Hughes was born June 24th, 1986 in Mission Viejo, CA. Philip Hughes attended Foothill High School in Santa Ana, CA, where he was a 1st team all-american. In his senior year in high school, Hughes went 9-1 with an 0.69 ERA. He was drafted out of high school by the New York Yankees in 2004, where he played in the Gulf Coast League. He appeared in only three games, pitching 5 innings, giving up 4 hits, and striking out 8. The next year he started with Charleston of the A league where he dominated. He went 7-1 with a 1.97 ERA. Appearing in 12 games, he pitched 68 2/3 innings giving up 46 hits, 19 runs (15 earned) 1 homerun, and striking out 72. He then went to Tampa of the advanced A league where he appeared in 5 games, winning 2 of them. He gave up 8 hits in 17 2/3 innings while giving up 6 runs, 4 walks, and striking out 21. The next year he started in Tampa, going 2-3 in 5 games pitching 30 innings, while giving up 19 hits, 7 runs, 2 walks, and striking out 30. He was then promoted to Trenton where he made a name of himself. He went 10-3 in 21 games and 116 innings. He gave up 73 hits, 30 runs, 5 homeruns, 32 walks, and striking out 138. While in Trenton, he was the subject of many trade rumors which never happened. George Steinbrenner also stated that he would leave Hughes in the minors until 2007, where he will likely make his debut sometime during the season. During the 2006 spring training Jorge Posada labeled him as the "Best arm in Camp" and Jason Giambi compared him to Roger Clemens.
